It has been confirmed that Greater Manchester Council will still receive the “urgently needed” £100m cash injection promised by the previous government.
There are fears that funding pledged under the Conservatives’ leveling-up strategy could be withdrawn following Labour’s election victory this summer.
But ministers confirmed the funding, earmarked for projects in areas including Bolton, Wythenshawe, Leigh and Denton, is still available.
Leigh’s Labor MP Jo Platt said she was “overjoyed” to know that “much needed investment” would still go ahead.
Platt was one of three Wigan councilors, including Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, who wrote to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner asking for the release of a pledged project for the town council Increased funding by £6 million.
In February we committed around £11 million to the regeneration of Leigh and Ashton-in-Makerfield town centres.
But ahead of last week’s budget, Platt said there was some uncertainty about whether the money would still be available.
She said raising funds for the town “took a long time” and called for help multiple times.
She said it would bring “much needed investment to our great towns”.
Projects in Bolton, Wythenshawe, Leigh and Denton are expected to receive up to £20m each.
Meanwhile, schemes in Farnworth, Chadderton and Heywood will also receive funding.
