A wildfire in Ventura County, California, fueled by 80 mph (130 km/h) winds, is spiraling out of control.
The fire was first reported early Wednesday near Moorpark, 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
Within a few hours, it reached the outskirts of Camarillo, a city of 70,000 people 10 miles away.
Thousands of residents were forced to flee, and several injuries were reported.
Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner said the fire was spreading “dangerously fast” and destroying everything in its path.
“The bush is burning, the grass is burning, the hedgerows are burning, the farmland is burning, the buildings are burning,” he said.
