Former Labor MP Beth Winter quits the party, accusing it of pursuing an “authoritarian political agenda”
Ms Winter, who represented the Señon Valley from 2019 to 2024, said Labour’s current aim was to “preserve the neoliberal status quo, serve corporate interests and protect the ruling class”.
In 2023, Ms Winter, a supporter of former British Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn, called Review the selection process After losing the race for a new seat following the boundary changes.
The Labor Party has been contacted for comment.
“Labour’s unprecedented persecution and brutal treatment of its socialist members, representatives and voters is disgraceful,” Ms Winter said in a statement.
She said she was elected on Labour’s 2019 manifesto and said she remained committed to “the manifesto’s vision of a fairer, more equal and greener society ‘for the many, not the few’.”
“Sadly, the Labor Party no longer represents a socialist vision and that is why I have decided today to no longer be a member.”
She said Labour’s budget last week was now “recognizable” and a “missed opportunity” that had resulted in “continued austerity, inequality, poverty and hardship for millions of people”.
She also criticized the UK government for not lifting the two-child cap on benefits and scrapping universal winter fuel payments.
