Former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon is out of prison after four months in prison.
Bannon, 70, was released from a correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, on Tuesday, Bureau of Prisons spokesman Benjamin O’Cone told the BBC.
Bannon, a conservative podcast host who was a key figure in Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, was convicted in 2022 of two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with congressional subpoenas related to the investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. .
According to the New York Times, Bannon said after his release: “If people think American politics has been divided before, you haven’t seen anything.”
Bannon is expected to host his podcast “The War Room” and hold a news conference in New York City on Tuesday.
Before being sent to prison, Bannon delivered a consistent message of loyalty to Trump and hostility to Democratic figures.
“I’m a political prisoner of Nancy Pelosi, I’m a political prisoner of Merrick Garland; I’m a political prisoner of Joe Biden and the corrupt Biden regime,” he said before being jailed.
He promised to continue helping Trump and his campaign while in prison.
“I have spent the last 10 years or so dedicated to serving my country,” he told the BBC before he was jailed, referring to politics and Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (Maga) slogan. “If I have to do it in jail, I’ll do it in jail – it doesn’t make any difference.”
The Trump loyalist claimed on his podcast in May that Democrats “will do whatever it takes to steal this election.”
He has repeatedly falsely claimed that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
Bannon still faces other legal troubles — in 2022, he was charged with money laundering, fraud and conspiracy in a separate case in New York state.
He is accused of defrauding donors in a fundraising campaign that promised to build part of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Bannon has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
