Former Bolivian President Evo Morales said on Sunday that a car he was riding in was shot at, an incident he condemned as an attempt to kill him.
A video he posted on social media appeared to show Morales sitting in the front seat of a car with at least two bullet holes in the windshield.
Morales’ Socialist Movement party said in a statement that men in black opened fire on the vehicle as it passed the military camp. The party said the government of President Luis Arce was responsible.
Arce condemned political violence and promised an investigation.
Both men belong to the ruling Maas party. But their relationship has become more strained since both men announced their intention to run as Mas party candidates in the 2025 presidential election.
Morales claimed the attack was a “joint operation of military and police forces”. He added that a bullet missed him “a few centimeters” and the driver of the car was injured.
Morales said the attack occurred near the base of the Bolivian Army’s 9th Division near Villa Tunari in the center of the country.
The pro-Morales wing of Mas’s party claimed those behind the attack entered the military camp and were evacuated by military helicopters.
“This is not an isolated incident, it is clear evidence that we are facing a fascist government,” the faction’s statement said.
Morales, who was president from 2006 to 2019, is facing legal troubles, including investigations into alleged statutory rape and human trafficking, which he denies.
For weeks, his supporters have blocked major roads across the country and clashed with police.
Morales believes the accusations are part of the interim president’s right-wing hatred of him.
Both he and Arce have loyal supporters who are willing to take to the streets — and sometimes engage in street fights — to show support for their candidates.
