Meta employees were reportedly fired for abusing the tech company’s meal voucher system, such as using it to buy toothpaste and laundry detergent.
Other policy violations include sharing coupons with others or going over budget, according to people who work at Meta.
There are differing accounts of how much warning, if any, the owners of Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp gave their employees before firing them.
Separately, the company has reportedly cut staff across its business. Meta has been contacted for comment.
Meta staff can receive vouchers for $25 (£19) lunch, $20 breakfast and $25 dinner, which can be used to order food from Grubhub, the US name for takeaway site Just Eat.
Posts on the anonymous work social message board Blind appear to confirm the content of the story, which was originally reported by the Financial Times.
One user wrote that more than 30 people were fired last week because they used points for “non-food items, shared points with people, or went over budget.”
Non-food items purchased included toothpaste, toothbrushes and wine glasses.
“They were warned to stop, and most did, but even when they stopped, they were still fired after three months,” the user said.
Some repeated claims that staff were warned, but other users wrote that there was no warning.
The company has also reportedly made layoffs at WhatsApp, Instagram and Reality Labs, the virtual reality business responsible for Oculus headsets.
Former Meta security engineer Jane Manchun Wong said Wednesday she lost her job as part of broader layoffs.
“I’m still trying to process this, but I’ve been informed that my role at Meta has been impacted,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
More than a year ago, Ms. Huang entered the 2022 Forbes 30 Under 30 list and was hired as a software engineer.
The layoffs were first reported by The Verge, with a spokesperson telling the tech publication: “Some teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with its long-term strategic goals and positioning strategies.
“This includes moving some teams to different locations and moving some staff into different roles. In these circumstances, when a role is eliminated, we work to find other opportunities for affected staff.”
