Coldplay’s 10th album, Moon Music, reached number one in the UK charts and sold more copies than the rest of the top 40 albums combined.
The Official Charts Company said the record has moved 237,000 units in the UK charts over the past seven days (a metric that includes streaming, downloads and physical sales).
It’s the biggest opening weekend for a UK album since the release of Adele’s 30 in 2021.
Coldplay are now tied with ABBA, Michael Jackson and Queen as the artist with the most chart-topping appearances on the Official Albums Chart, with 10 each. The Beatles have topped the charts 16 times, a historical record.
“Thank you to everyone who supported Moon Music’s release,” the band posted on social media after the rankings were announced.
“It does mean the world.”
shopping channel gimmick
Most of Moon Music’s sales (about 209,000) are CDs and vinyl, suggesting it doesn’t have a lot of streaming numbers.
However, the songs “Feels Like I’m Falling In Love” and “We Pray” received enough plays to enter the top 20 on this week’s singles chart.
Twenty-five years after their debut, the band have been promoting their latest record.
Last week, the quartet hosted a Half-hour segment on shopping channel QVCFrontman Chris Martin appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s US talk show disguised as “Nigel”, an incompetent street performer whose song and original There is no resemblance.
Martin appears at a New York record store Serenading 70-year-old fans Came to see them on her birthday.
one day ago, He improvised a brand new song in Brooklynone fan attempted to request the song “Fix You,” but instead yelled: “Play ‘Fix It’.”
All this promotion, plus performances on Saturday Night Live and Today morning TV shows (which feature puppets), means Coldplay are also expected to top the US Billboard charts this week.
If they can do this, it will be the first time a British band has reached No. 1 on either side of the Atlantic since The 1975 achieved the feat with their 2016 album I Like It When You Sleep (You Are So Beautiful Yet So) one.
However, not even Coldplay could challenge Taylor’s UK chart throne.
The band was just shy of the 270,000 first-week sales she achieved in April for The Tortured Poets Department, meaning she still holds the record for the highest first-week sales of the year.
Sabrina’s solo success
On the singles chart, breakout pop singer Sabrina Carpenter makes history as the woman with the most consecutive weeks on the singles chart.
The Pennsylvania-born singer has already passed 19 weeks in the countdown to 2024, thanks to three hit singles: “Espresso” (seven weeks), “Please Please Please” (five weeks) and ” Taste” (seven weeks and counting).
She surpassed Olivia Newton-John, who spent 16 weeks at No. 1 in 1978, and tied Ed Sheeran for most all-time No. 1s this century. The maximum number of weeks.
Meanwhile, Netflix’s controversial true-crime drama Monsters: The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story has re-entered the top 40 with two classic hits.
Crowded House’s 1987 single Don’t Dream It’s Over reappears at No. 37, and Milli Vanilli’s “I’m Gonna Miss You” follows at No. 40.
Viewers of the show will know that the latter number was performed, somewhat oddly, by the Menendez brothers at their parents’ funeral in 1989.
The choice seemed so inappropriate that the Netflix show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, had to confirm that the incident actually happened in real life, commenting that the choice was “really irredeemable.”
