British tech tycoon Mike Lynch drowned when a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily, but his daughter’s death is under investigation.
In the early morning of August 19, a 56 m (184 ft) Bayesian sailing ship was wrecked by bad weather, killing seven people.
Mr Lynch, 59, his daughter Hannah, 18, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife Judy, 71 The inquest opened at Suffolk Coroner’s Court in Ipswich. The Bloomers’ deaths are also under investigation.
Senior coroner Nigel Parsley told the brief hearing that he would postpone the four inquests until April 15, 2025.
The court heard from Suffolk Police Sergeant Mike Brown.
He told the hearing on Friday morning that the provisional cause of Ms Lynch’s death was “under investigation” following a post-mortem examination on September 7.
Mr Lynch’s autopsy was carried out on September 6 and the cause of death was drowning.
An autopsy was also conducted on the Bloomers, but the cause of their deaths remains “under investigation,” the inquest said.
Sheriff Brown said that the time of death of the four people was recorded as 05:00 that day.
Mr Parsley questioned whether the provisional cause of death, which he was “currently investigating” at this stage, was common.
The officer told the court: “In the opinion of the pathologist, such a verdict is not unusual at this time.”
The Bloomers, from Knockholt, Kent, regularly attended St Catherine’s Church in the village.
Reverend Tim Edwards previously told the BBC they were well known in the village and among other churchgoers.
There were 10 passengers and 12 crew members on board the Bayes when it sank.
Sheriff Brown told the court that the Bayes was 0.8 nautical miles off the coast of the fishing village of Porticello.
Fifteen people managed to escape into the lifeboat including a one-year-old child and Angela Bacares, Mr. Lynch’s wife.

Chief Inspector Brown said Italian authorities would be the lead investigators on the case and Suffolk Police would await information from them.
He added that Bayesian decline “rapidly” for “reasons that have yet to be determined.”
Mr Lynch is a well-known figure in the British technology industry but has been thrust into the spotlight recently due to a long-running legal dispute that has led to his extradition to the United States to face fraud charges.
