On Monday night, a man went on a knife attack inside a Shanghai Walmart, killing three people and injuring 15 others.
Chinese police said they arrested a 37-year-old man surnamed Lin at the scene, adding that he came to Shanghai “to vent his anger over a personal financial dispute.” Further investigation is ongoing.
The incident occurred at a shopping mall in Songjiang, a densely populated area in the southwest of the city that is home to several universities.
The three victims died of their injuries in hospital, police said. Others suffered “no life-threatening injuries” and are not believed to be in danger.
“There was blood everywhere,” an eyewitness named Shi told BBC News.
Mr. Shi, who runs a jewelry store on the ground floor of Ludu International Commercial Plaza, said dozens of firefighters and special weapons and tactics personnel entered the mall and asked people to evacuate.
“I don’t know what happened, but suddenly I saw people running away in panic,” he said.
“No one has ever experienced anything like this and we were not mentally prepared… Such random events are scary and disturbing,” he said, adding that he “almost narrowly escaped death.”

The supermarket opened on Tuesday with enhanced safety measures.
