A mass shooting occurred in a remote town in South Africa, killing 17 people, and police are searching for the perpetrators.
Two farmsteads in the Eastern Cape town of Lusikisiki were targeted, with 12 women and a man killed at one location and three women and a man at the second location, police said.
The South African Police Service said the 18th victim was being treated in hospital in critical condition.
The Police Minister and Commissioner will deliver a national briefing on Saturday at 13:00 local time (12:00 BST).
South African media reported that the victims were relatives and neighbors of Ngobo Zananyadi village in Lusikisiki.
They said the group had gathered at the house for a traditional mourning ceremony when it was attacked on Friday night.
News outlet Dispatch Live quoted the local mayor of Inguzahir, Nonkosi Pepin, as saying: “The gunmen came and opened fire at will, killing everyone. Women and children were also killed in the bloody shooting.”
“It scares the community.”
