A Russian attack on an apartment building in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv killed at least three people and injured 31 others, local officials said.
Officials said the wave of attacks hit four areas and used guided glide bombs on Tuesday.
Ukrainian President Zelensky said: “Russian bombs target residential buildings, bakeries, stadiums…that is, the daily life of ordinary people.”
The attack comes as fighting intensifies in the east of the country, with Russian troops surrounding and closing in on the largely destroyed town of Vukhledar.
Zelensky issued a statement shortly after the Kharkiv blitz on Tuesday, sharing photos of a destroyed residential building that showed a large hole in the middle.
He called on allies to “stop the terror”. He was speaking at the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New YorkArriving in Ukraine on Monday, he reiterated Ukraine’s need for timely U.S. military assistance.
“There is a lot of discussion in the UN General Assembly now about security and collective efforts for the future. But we just need to stop the terror. To be safe. To have a future,” Zelensky said.
Meanwhile, in Kharkiv, officials said the neighborhood that was hit had been hit previously at the start of the war.
“It was almost repaired, all the windows were installed, insulated and ready for the heating season. The enemy hit it again with KAB [glide bomb]” Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekov said on Telegram.
Russia increasingly uses glide bombs In recent months – Soviet-era bombs have been equipped with wings and satellite navigation equipment. They are cheap, destructive and said to be key to further Russian territorial gains in Ukraine.
They were used in the Kharkov attack in May, and military analysts also noted that they appeared to be Used for the first time in the city of Zaporozhye Sunday night.
Ukrainian officials said Russia carried out seven airstrikes using KAB glide bombs, hitting 13 homes and two educational facilities, injuring at least 21 civilians.
Zaporozhye officials also said Russia carried out another attack on the southeastern city on Monday night, killing one person and wounding at least four others, including two children.
Russian forces have made significant gains in eastern Ukraine and are closing in on the coal mining town of Vukhledar, just south of the Donbass frontline. The Russians had been trying to capture the town since the full-scale invasion began.
On Monday, Russian military blogs reported that Moscow’s troops had entered the outskirts of towns in the Donetsk region. The Ukrainian military only mentioned multiple attempts to seize its position in Vukhledar.
Meanwhile, Russian troops have also recently been operating near Khlibok, Kupyansk and Pokrovsk, according to the Institute for War Studies, a US think tank.
