A father who sent his 17-year-old son to kill rapper PnB Rock has been sentenced to 31 years to life in prison.
PnB, whose real name was Rakim Hasheem Allen, was shot dead by a masked gunman in front of his girlfriend at a Los Angeles restaurant.
Freddie Trone, 42, denies ordering his teenage son to carry out the killing in September 2022, and his defense told the trial he was only an accessory after the fact. According to the Associated Press.
But in August, he was found guilty of murder, two counts of second-degree robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery.
The second defendant, Tremont Jones, was convicted of two counts of second-degree robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
in a statement “Justice was served today when two men were sentenced for this tragic and senseless murder,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, who was released following Monday’s sentencing.
“His life was cut short by an act of violence that no family should have to endure.”
Both sides agreed in court that Trone’s son walked into Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffle House, shot the rapper and then took his jewelry.
Now 19, he has been charged with murder but has not yet been found competent to stand trial.
Trone’s legal team said he plans to appeal his sentence.
Shortly after PnB’s death, his girlfriend Stephanie Sibounheuang posted on Instagram that he saved her life during the attack.
“I shouldn’t be here, but [because] his. I am,” she wrote.
She described the traumatic aftermath of the shooting, being unable to ride with him in the ambulance and being forced to leave the restaurant while police investigated.
“My world is dark right now. My heart breaks for my children,” she wrote.
PnB was born in Philadelphia in 1991 and rose to fame with the release of his hit song “Selish” in 2016.
He has collaborated with artists such as Ed Sheeran and recorded two studio albums, CatchThese Vibes and Trapstar Turnt PopStar.
Just two days before filming, he released his last song, “Luv Me Again.”
Following his death, tributes poured in from artists including Drake, who posted a photo of the two together on his Instagram Story, and Nicki Minaj, who said PnB was “a pleasure to work with.”
