At least 194 migrants died while trying to cross the English Channel between 2018 and September 2024, according to estimates from the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Many of these deaths occurred while crossing the English Channel, with 80 people known to have drowned.
But the IOM data also includes people who traveled to border crossings and died from other causes, such as car accidents or medical problems.
The International Organization for Migration said 47 people had died so far in 2024, the highest number since 2019, when 50 people died.
On September 3, 12 people died, the highest death toll in the English Channel in 2024.
On September 15, eight people died.
In November 2021, at least 27 migrants died after a small boat sank, the highest death toll in a single incident.
