This article reveals the winners of the global celebrity contest.
The winner of the latest series of the global celebrity competition described the experience as “exciting, inspiring and exhausting”.
BBC Radio 2 presenter Scott Mills and his husband Sam were the first to reach the final checkpoint at the Frutilral Osorno volcano in Chile.
The episode averaged 3.7 million viewers, according to overnight viewing data.
Actor Kola Bokinni and his cousin Mary Ellen Moriarty came in second place, arriving at the checkpoint after 2 hours and 20 minutes.
The remaining two pairs – TV host Jeff Blazer and his son Freddie, and model Kelly Brook and her husband Jeremy Parisi – arrived the next day Osorno Volcano and finished third and fourth respectively.
Arriving at the checkpoint, Brooke said it meant “everything was done.”
“Jeremy wanted to win and I just wanted to finish. To be honest, we were in last place so I felt like we should just be happy from day one, it wouldn’t make any difference!”
Mills told Radio 2 on Thursday morning that he felt “a bit sad now that it’s all over”.
He added that it “really felt like anyone could have won” with just 39 minutes separating the teams at the start of the final leg.
Despite starting the final leg in third place, the couple decided on a coin toss to decide the route from Tirkala to Fruitilal.
They decided to go through Argentina to San Salvador and then to Mendoza.
After opening the guestbook to find out they were the winners, the two jumped up and down, yelled “Oh my God, we did it,” and hugged each other in excitement.
Reflecting on the journey in the interview Mills, who spent 12,500 kilometers across South America, said: “When we got to the top of the volcano, we hugged and cried for a while.
“People keep telling us we won, but I still can’t figure it out. I can’t get it in my head.”
DJ said he thought they were the last to arrive at the checkpoint.
“I do remember saying to him, ‘There’s no point in running away, Sam, we’ve already lost.'”
The 51-year-old, who has been hosting the afternoon show on Radio 2 since September 2022, said the experience had changed the way he now travels.
“There have been a few weekends since we’ve been filming the show where I’ve left my phone on me and I’ll put it in a drawer.
“We’re leaving for a belated honeymoon in October and I’ve told my agent, my mom and people I talk to regularly that I won’t be on the phone all week.
“I did it for five weeks and it was great – when we were allowed, we didn’t even want to get our phones back.”
Over the past few weeks, he’s received “many messages from listeners saying it inspired them to take their own road trip.”
“This show opens up the world of travel to people.”
The couple, who married in June, said the experience had made their “relationship even stronger”.
“I knew Sam was the one, but this whole experience left me completely aware, without a doubt, that he was the one.
“We may never have this much time again when we are completely disconnected from the world.”
Looking back on the entire experience, Mills said, “I thought I knew a lot about the world, but I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. It was exciting, inspiring, and exhausting.”
Mills, who takes over from Zoe Ball on Radio 2 on Thursday, told listeners that his favorite locations were Uruguay and Chile.
“I love the finish in Uruguay and Chile, which looks like a ski resort in Austria, very different from where we start in the Amazon.”
